Of appeasement and Nepal going India way
by Dina Nath Mishra

Recently Himal Khabar Patrika organised an interaction with Muslim intellectuals. The interaction was on usual pattern. It noted, Nepal has 10 per cent Muslim population. Three decades ago it was just two per cent.

Mohd Habuhullah of MJF asserted that the Muslim community wants an identity and representation in the new constitution of Nepal. Rahmatulla Miyan of Nepal Muslim Journalist Association, apart from repeating other demands, added the demand of reservation for Muslims. He complained that Muslims in Nepal are being discriminated and treated as refugees.

Muhammadin Ali of Legal Research and Advice Centre surmised that Muslims do not make majority anywhere in the country though they are dominant in Tarai area. Maulana Gulam Rasool Falahi of Al-hera Educational Society lamented that if Muslims raise the issue of discrimination and injustice, they are termed as communal and fundamentalists. The Society doubts if the new Nepalese constitution will guarantee their rights at all.

Tahir Ali Ansari, Advocate, points out that there is no mention of Muslims in the constitution and they have no identity. He further says that Muslims want proportional representation in every State mechanism - not only in the Central Administrative level, but at district and village level also. Nazrul Hasan Falahi of Amir Islamic Association, stated that Muslims do not like co-education system, hence, the State should make arrangements for separate schools for boys and girls. Madarsa education too should be recognised and Urdu should be included in the curriculum.

If one goes through the seminar proceedings, one can find in it every such demand as raised by the Muslim League in pre-partitioned India. The sudden rise in the Muslim population in Nepal is also due to a Bangladeshi influx. In the Tarai area of Nepal, mosques are multiplying. These mosques are shelter houses for militants and fundamentalists. Not only this, the Muslim movement is well-equipped with studies also.

Whatever Muslim agitationists may say, they are getting adequate funds from the Wahhabi Movement of Saudi Arabia. Just within a year, they have created an atmosphere whereby on March 18, Muslims and the Maoist Government concluded a deal for forming Muslim Commission guaranteeing constitutional identity to them. Muslims have a problem of identity with Tharus community in the southern planes. Negotiating Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Janardan Sharma has agreed to amend all sorts of constitutional and legal provisions that conflict with or overshadow the identity of Muslims. The Maoist Government has also conceded the demand of public holidays on the days of festivities of the Muslim community. It has committed proportional representation of Muslims in all State organs.

Here, one can clearly see that the Muslim community has behaved on their Indian pattern and the Nepali politicians, likewise, have succumbed to Muslim appeasement. Nepal is the newest experiment of Islamisation of a State, the process for which has been started. The pattern is worldwide. It has already resulted in creation of two Islamic nations - Pakistan and the Bangladesh.

One British officer wrote in his diary about the pattern of Muslim behaviour: "wherever they are in minority they are troublesome and where they are in majority they are tyrants". I will give some examples - Lebanon was liberated from French rule in 1941. It had, at that time, an equal number of Christians and Muslims.

Within a few years, the Muslims showed discontent against Christians. The Muslim population rose to 60 per cent and they started agitation for scrapping of the constitution as also establishment of Islamic rule in Lebanon. The result was civil war for decades.

Cyprus is yet another example. It attained independence on August 16, 1960, from British rule. The Muslim population of Cyprus at that time was 18% and 82% of the population was Christian. The Muslims drifted against Christians, and the drift shape d into terror against the majority community. UN intervention went in vain.

In 1974, Islamist terrorists indulged in murder, rape and other atrocities resulting in lakhs of Greek Christians fleeing to southern Cyprus.

Bulgaria was a Slovak dominant country with a 30% Muslim population. According to Islamic theory, Bulgaria was Darul Harb for Muslims hence they had to wage Jihad against them. The communist Bulgarian Government, however, took stern action to put down the Islamic assault. Muslims constitute 18% of population of former Yugoslavia where Serbs, Croats and Muslims were the local population. While Serbs and Croats were Christians, the Muslims were converts following Turkish rule in 14th century. After the departure of Marshal Tito they declined to be in the mainstream. Bosnia and Croatia witnessed Jihad against the local population which continued for long.
